The North Dakota Department of Commerce and North Dakota Information Technology (NDIT) have partnered to launch Dakota BOT on ND.gov, expanding access to an AI-powered chatbot designed to help citizens, businesses and visitors find information and navigate state government services more easily.

The launch builds on North Dakota Tourism's earlier success with its website chatbot, which was introduced before Dakota BOT was developed. Tourism's experience implementing and managing the chatbot provided a foundation for the strategy, approach and lessons learned that helped guide Dakota BOT's development. By building on an established AI initiative, Commerce and NDIT were able to apply practical experience to a broader effort to improve access to state government information.

"North Dakota continues to lead by embracing innovative tools that make government more accessible and responsive to the people we serve," said Gov. Kelly Armstrong. "Expanding Dakota BOT to ND.gov helps connect citizens, businesses and visitors with the information they need faster and more efficiently while demonstrating how artificial intelligence can improve the delivery of public services."

Dakota BOT was first launched on the Department of Commerce website in May 2026, where it has demonstrated promising results. Since its launch, the chatbot has generated nearly 600 questions across more than 400 conversational sessions and successfully answered 81% of the questions asked. These early results demonstrate the potential for AI-powered tools to improve access to information and provide timely assistance to website visitors.

The expansion to ND.gov marks another step in North Dakota's commitment to innovation, efficiency and customer service. By making information easier to find and services more responsive, Dakota BOT helps people connect with the resources they need anytime and from anywhere.

Dakota BOT serves as a digital front door to state government, offering 24/7 support and conversational responses. Developed with input from agencies across state government, the chatbot uses structured workflows and frequently asked questions to guide users to relevant information and resources quickly and accurately.

The technology also offers benefits for state agencies by helping reduce repetitive inquiries, improve service delivery and free up staff time to focus on more complex questions and individual needs.

Through the partnership between Commerce and NDIT, Dakota BOT represents an ongoing effort to explore practical applications of artificial intelligence that make government information more accessible and improve the overall experience for citizens, businesses and visitors.

As Dakota BOT continues to expand across state government websites, North Dakota will have additional opportunities to evaluate its performance, enhance its capabilities and identify new ways to use AI to support responsive, accessible public service.
