The Challenge: A Vision for Vibrancy in Valley City In 2024, leaders in Valley City wanted more than a fresh coat of paint—they sought to energize their downtown, increase community pride, and make public space more vibrant and inclusive. But how do you turn a blank wall into a symbol of collective identity? The idea needed to be more than beautiful; it had to be meaningful, collaborative, and accessible to all.
A Colorful Community Collaboration It all started with a single question: “What color do you think of when you think of Valley City?” That spark ignited a mural movement led by the Valley City-Barnes County Development Corporation and supported by a Vibrancy Grant through the North Dakota Main Street Initiative.
To ensure wide participation, the committee chose a paint-by-number mural design that welcomed residents of every age and ability. In August 2024, local artists incorporated elements that represent the town's heart such as wheat for agriculture, a cowboy hat honoring the North Dakota Winter Show, and books symbolizing the newly restored Carnegie Library.
The community came together to paint during the Summer Vikes on Central event in September. More than 700 participants, including Valley City State University students, high school art classes and families, picked up brushes and helped bring the mural to life.
Macy Schlaht, Marketing Coordinator for Valley City Tourism and Valley City Parks and Rec, was a vital part of bringing the project together.
"It is very special to be able to look and drive down central and be able to see it and be like you know, I did that. We did that. Like our committee came together, we had this idea and we got to put it and bring it to life. And it is a very proud moment".
The Power of Partnership The project was made possible by support from the Main Street Initiative's Vibrancy Grant, which provided funding for supplies, artist support, and community outreach. At the heart of the project was a collaboration between Commerce and local champion Trinity Nelson, who helped coordinate outreach and engage volunteers.
Anya Hondel, a program administrator with North Dakota Commerce, provided support throughout the project, sharing: “It has been a pleasure to collaborate with Trinity Nelson through our Vibrancy Grant Program. This initiative really highlighted the power of youth engagement and demonstrated how creative placemaking can transform not just a space, but a spirit.”
A Lasting Legacy in Color and Connection Today, the mural stands proudly in downtown Valley City as a bright, bold tribute to the people and stories that shape the community. It has not only beautified the space, but sparked conversations, increased foot traffic downtown, and inspired ideas for future art installations and civic projects.
“Our partnership with Commerce has been so huge because we probably wouldn't have been able to do this without external funding. That is really hard in a small community and we appreciate that so much". - Macy
And in a show of their resourcefulness and commitment to vibrancy, the team was able to use leftover grant funds to complete a second mural just a few blocks away. This new piece, featuring bright color flowers in an abstract style, continues the momentum of the initial project.
