Keynote:
Using Census Bureau Demographic and Economic Data to Spur Economic Development
Andy Hait, US Census Bureau
The mission of every economic development group is to guide smart decisions that serve the residents and businesses in their area. While these groups would love to attract the one large corporate employer to their area, smart business growth often involves promoting the smaller and medium-sized businesses that help define the character of our communities. This session will explore the demographic and business data from the US Census Bureau and how it can be used to fuel these development and investment decisions. While understanding the potential customers of a business is certainly important, understanding the existing businesses in an area is often overlooked. The monthly, quarterly, and annual business data available from Census will be explored. These data pieces can help identify business gaps. Also understand how the self-employed persons is impacting the business community on a nationwide and local level. |
